Bitcoin Policy Norway was established following repeated proposals by Norwegian politicians to investigate a ban on Bitcoin mining, which caused concern within the Norwegian community. The initiative was led by Svein Ølnes, a former senior researcher at Western Norway Research Institute, and gathered 116 members just a few weeks after its founding.
The founding meeting took place on January 18, 2025, at Mesh in Oslo, with over 100 enthusiasts in attendance.
