In a bold move signaling a shift in Norway’s financial and political discourse, Morten Søberg — former Director at SpareBank 1 Gruppen and State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance — has been appointed Secretary General of Bitcoin Policy Norway. Søberg will officially take on the role from September 1, 2025.
The announcement marks a milestone for the organization, which was founded to counter widespread political ignorance and misinformation surrounding Bitcoin in Norway.
“Politicians either ignore Bitcoin entirely or misunderstand it,” says the organization in a statement to its members. “Myths like ‘Bitcoin harms the environment,’ ‘Bitcoin is for criminals,’ or ‘Bitcoin will collapse’ continue to spread — unchallenged — because no credible voice has stepped up to provide trustworthy information.”
That voice has now arrived.
Søberg brings a rare combination of insider experience and independent thought. In addition to serving on the board of Norges Bank’s Supervisory Council, he holds a PhD in experimental economics from the University of Oslo and a master’s degree in blockchain and digital assets from the Frankfurt School of Finance. According to BPI, this makes him uniquely qualified to bridge the worlds of traditional economics and Bitcoin.
“Bitcoin is a fantastic entry point for discussions and thinking about some of the most fundamental aspects of any society — monetary systems and economic value,” Søberg says. “Both the field of economics and economic policymaking will benefit from a deeper understanding of what Bitcoin is and what it might become.”
Thanks to support from over 120 members and several major donors, BPI now has the financial strength to hire a full-time Secretary General. The goal is clear: challenge the economic dogmas that dominate Norway’s political conversation about Bitcoin.
“With Søberg on board, the organization gains instant credibility,” the statement reads. “His political experience and economic insight ensure that when the Bitcoin Policy speaks, Norwegian policymakers will have no choice but to listen.”
